A “p-Buzz” is a musical instrument designed for introducing children to brass instruments. It’s essentially a simplified version of a traditional brass instrument, the trombone, but with a simplified construction and functionality.
The “p” in p-Buzz stands for “plastic,” as these instruments are made of plastic rather than metal, making them lighter to hold, more durable and less expensive.
p-Buzz instruments are often used in music education settings, particularly in early childhood music programs or in schools, as they provide a fun and accessible way for children to explore brass instruments and develop basic skills such as breath control, embouchure (mouth position), and arm/hand/ coordination. The p-Buzz uses a standard tenor trombone mouthpiece which tends to be very easy in terms of producing a sound for young children due to it’s larger size when compared to a trumpet mouthpiece.
Overall, the p-Buzz serves as a valuable introductory tool for young aspiring musicians, helping to ignite their interest in music and laying the foundation for further exploration of brass instruments in the future.
In addition to the p-Buzz, there are other instruments such as the p-Bone and p-Trumpet/p-Cornet to introduce young children to a broad range of “brass” instruments.
