Since the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020 we have been offering 1-1 instrumental lessons online, via Skype, in a bid to keep musical learning open and accessible to all pupils. The format has worked really well and we even recorded an Online Summer Concert during the lockdown – see the video here.
There are a few things to think about when considering the set-up for instrumental lessons online, as follows:
- It might take us a few minutes to get ourselves connected, cameras in the right place, sound working etc. during our first session – we will allow some extra time for this so that we can still have a full lesson. Once we’ve done this for the first lesson it should be easier going forward. Some tips on this front:
- If possible ensure whichever device you are using is plugged into the mains rather than running on battery
- Ensure your device has the latest updates installed
- If possible connect to the internet via wired rather than wireless connection
- Check camera position so that I can see your child’s hands, face and instrument
- Check the lighting so that your child is lit from in front rather than behind
- Our preference is to use Skype for the lessons – please download Skype if you don’t have this already, and ensure your are running the latest version. If you have issues with Skype please let me know and we can look at other options.
3. We often use a metronome in lessons; there are some free resources available for your use online or via an app on a phone / tablet. Since there is likely to be a slight delay in the audio on our call your child will need to start and stop their own metronome if we use one; it would be worth your while working out how he/she can have access to a metronome and also how to operate it. The simple versions are very basic; you just set a tempo (e.g. 60 BPM and then press start). You can also buy metronomes like this one which might be a worthwhile investment. They are invaluable practice tools so investing in one like this is a good idea.
4. Since lessons will take place outside of a school environment it is necessary to highlight our safeguarding policies in order to ensure lessons are delivered in a safe and appropriate manner:
- An adult must be present at the start of a lesson (for all pupils under the age of 18). No lesson can take place otherwise.
- Lessons are not to be recorded by either party and permission must be sought if this is to take place.
- All student and staff conduct is to be just as professional as it would be face to face at school. This includes conducting the lesson in an appropriate space in your home and being in appropriate clothing.
- It is up to you whether you remain in the room for the lesson or leave after we have initiated the call. If you do leave the room then the student must remain in a room with an open door.
